Sitting above downtown Charlotte Amalie like the inviting mansion that it is, Hotel 1829 is about as grand as it gets for its price point. The hotel’s courtyard is pleasing; its bar, with its brick walls, has a similarly stately atmosphere, and broad balconies are a lovely place to watch night fall or eavesdrop on bands of Danish tourists exploring their homeland’s one-time colony.
Rooms are adequate though somewhat dated. Our room, which was in the hotel’s least expensive “moderate” class, felt a little bit like the guestroom at an elderly rich person’s house, long overdue ...
